Dr. ROCHA denies demand for enrollment of summer session and fall morning classes. - Dean of Aviation and travel Dr. MATTEO says student input and student needs are not important at WLACC. Chairmen of Aviation and Travel Scott Feinerman says DR. ROCHA owns WLACC. President Dr. Rocha refuses to except demand for Aviation Maintenance Technicians(AMT) is at an all time high.
DR. ROCHA and DR. Mateo's lack of knowledge of Aviation and Aerospace(A&A) has lessened the potential of the a crown jewel of Los Angeles Community College District. Rumor is that they have made an under the table deal to sell off at least part of the complex to an entertainment concern. This is a mistake considering that the Aviation and Aerospace labor need for licensed A&P(Airframe and Powerplant)mechanics is highest it has been since WW 2. There is also a serious need for A&A training facilities of the quality that exists at WLACC aviation complex.
The Administration is running away from being hit blind sided by the truth ; that they failed to maximize the potential of the Aviation Maintenance complex and department. They have failed to market the AMT program to potential students in area high schools or to those already employed by A&A industry. They have failed to contact Los Angeles based Aviation and Aerospace companies about the potential of the facility to be used as a training hub. The A&A industry continually trains their employees. Most AMT schools around the country are at or over capacity.
We are demanding the reinstatement of summer classes and continued commitment to both morning and evening sessions. The aviation club has shown through petitions that we can pack the summer classes for 2008 and both morning and evening sessions for fall 2008 and beyond.
We have yet to fully market the program ( all volunteer ) but anticipate full capacity of 3 evening and 2 morning classes if not more. This is not counting industry supported "fam" training that could take place at other times. The club has started to outreach to the local high schools and is preparing to contact local A&A companies.
The administration of West Los Angeles Community College has failed in maintaining Aviation Maintenance department and maximizing its potential. If the administration does not reverse its mistakes by reinstating summer session and make an honest commitment to both morning and evening session, then they should resign.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
Should they resign ?PLEASE POST COMMENTS BELOW.

I attended a student council meeting that Dr. Rocha attended and it became obvious from Rocha's reaction to council that he's not interested in two way discussions about education, students or programs. What really made his eyes light up was construction talk. In fact, he went on for more than an hour about the construction of the several new buildings going up at West LA College. With each of these buildings price tags of over $150M each, the budget he is overseeing is over a billion dollars.
What becomes apparent is that with these kind of numbers there are inevitably backroom dealings and payoffs for awards of contracts that are worth millions of dollars. Moreover, there is almost NO OVERSIGHT.
What I'd like to see would be an investigative reporter research the money trail and find out how these folks are profiting while they are neglecting their charter ...which is to allow us access to education that we've all paid for with our taxes. Then have them prosecuted and removed in shame. We'd then have a chance at some honest educators who would promote EDUCATION!
